Diesel Becoming a More Economical Option

After hitting a high of $4.84/gal. this summer, diesel prices are in a swoon–and consumers looking to embrace a cleaner, more fuel-efficient engine should give them a second look.

First some history:
This country is more than a decade behind Europe in embracing Diesel engines as more fuel efficient alternatives to conventional gasoline engines. They offer 30-40% better fuel economy, longer engine life, and fantastic low-end torque–for a very dynamic and cost-effective driving experience.

Unfortunately, GM’s diesel experience in the late 70’s and early 80’s managed to sour most of the American car-buying public on diesels and domestic auto companies were unwilling to invest and re- educate in the new clean diesel technology.

If you check the EPA top fuel economy list, VW’s diesels are perennial favorites. Mercedes is re- introducing diesels to the U.S. market with its new Bluetech lineup of clean diesel engines. Even the domestics, under intense pressure to cut their Corporate Average Fuel Economy number to meet new, tougher standards have made announcements about new diesel power-trains planned for the future.

But re-emergence has been scuttled by skyrocketing prices for diesel at the pump. Traditionally, diesel falls below gasoline in the summer months, and rises when demand for heating oil increases. The increased pump price has largely canceled out whatever cost savings greater fuel efficiency was offering. Even if the price were marginally lower, consumers would balk, unable to leap the psychological barrier of paying a higher pump price, even if it offered better mileage.

Now comes word Valero and Total are both boosting output of diesel fuel and investing $6 Billion in new capacity. At the same time, the recessions is killing demand for diesel and forecasters believe the price will fall below the price of gasoline sometime this spring. Bloomberg reports the New York Harbor price is only 14 cents above gasoline falling sharp declines in diesel prices and modest increases in gasoline.

J.D. Power predicts diesel market penetration will increase from today’s 3% to 9% by 2015. That’s a far cry from Europe’s diesel market share of 53%.

BMW is joining the diesel rebound with a new 3 series sedan that gets 23/36 mpg powered by a turbo- diesel. But the champion in the segment is the VW Jetta TDI (See Dan’s comment to our previous blog). The Jetta has nearly a 600 mile range with city mileage at 30 mpg, 41 mpg on the highway manual transmission).

Again, these are not the smelly, knockety-knock, diesels you remember. They are quiet, clean and offer a great return on investment.

Even if you’d never consider driving one. Most of what you eat, wear, and otherwise consume, is probably delivered by diesel-powered trucks or rail, and the drop in diesel prices should ease upward pressure on the prices of all consumer goods. That alone is reason enough to rejoice.

How to Instal AFCO Heat Exchanger On S197 Saleen

This thread will require several posts to complete so please be patient. About 4 months ago I decided to upgrade the Saleen S/C heat exchanger with one that was larger and more efficient. I read every thread on every forum I could find and talked to every manufacturer that was on my short list of vendors (Fluidyne, Gords, Afco, Saleen & Steeda). After carefully evaluating my needs for a daily driver and what each manufacturers product had to offer I chose to install the Afco GT 500 Pro-Series Dual Pass Heat Exchanger. Now for those of you that disagree with that choice you are entitled to your opinion but let me mention some facts that are indisputable:
• The Afco heat exchanger is a dual pass design heat exchanger rather than a single pass design
• The Saleen Series VI heat exchanger core measures 5" x 24.5" x 2" = 122.5 sq" of frontal surface area and 245 sq" total core area
• The Afco heat exchanger core measures 9" x 22.5" x 2.5" = 202.5 sq" of frontal surface area and 506.25 sq" of total core area
• The frontal surface area of the Afco unit is 165% larger than the Saleen heat exchanger
• The total core area of the Afco heat exchanger is 206% larger than the Saleen heat exchanger
• The Saleen heat exchanger tanks measure 5" x 2" x 2" = 20 sq" and holds approx 11 oz. of fluid
• The Afco heat exchanger tanks measure 9" x 4" x 2.5" = 90 sq" and holds approx 50 oz. of fluid
• The Afco heat exchanger tanks hold 39 oz. (450%) more fluid than the Saleen heat exchanger
• The fluid inlet connection on the Afco heat exchanger is on the same side as the Saleen heat exchanger but is pointed 180* from the direction it needs to point for a direct bolt in installation
• The fluid outlet fitting on the Afco heat exchanger is on the opposite end of the heat exchanger when compared to the Saleen heat exchanger
• The mounting of the Afco heat exchanger is identical to the Saleen heat exchanger. The Afco heat exchanger mounts on the back side of the front bumper and uses the 4 inner mounting bolts with vibration isolators and locknuts
• Lastly I picked this Afco heat exchanger up for $359.99 from D'Agostino Racing and the unit arrived UPS the very next day

I will not go into R&I of the front fascia as anyone that is considering this mod is more than capable of performing that task. Same holds true for removal of the Saleen heat exchanger.

Once the front fascia and Saleen heat exchanger was removed, the Afco unit was mounted to the backside of the front bumper on (4) longer bolts, with vibration isolators, spacers and locknuts. Be warned even though this unit is only .5" thicker than the Saleen heat exchanger, it is a very tight fit due to the inlet fitting sticking out of the rear of the heat exchanger. That fitting almost touches the A/C condenser. But with a little tweaking of the Afco heat exchanger mounting brackets, it will fit without touching the A/C condenser. The next issue is the P/S cooler. The brackets must be tweaked so the P/S cooler tubes are vertical and much closer to the A/C condenser than before. However, this can be accomplished without the P/S cooler touching either the heat exchanger or the A/C ondenser. Next is the coolant inlet fitting. It is on the correct end of the heat exchanger but the nipple points in the exact wrong direction. Not a big deal. (2) 3/4" 90* short hose elbows, a 3/4" barbed nipple and some clamps solve that problem and get the inlet hose pointed directly at the intercooler pump. Next is the heat exchanger coolant outlet fitting. It is on the wrong end of the heat exchanger. No problem. (2) more 3/4" 90* short hose elbows, a couple of 3/4" barbed nipples, some clamps, and a piece of 3/4" hose can be used to route the outlet hose to the opposite end of the heat exchanger and it easily connects to the original Saleen heat exchanger outlet hose. The following pictures are in no specific order.

I recommend if you going to do this job to get a helper to prevent damaging the heat exchanger or A/C condenser. I did this job entirely by myself which made the job take a little longer. Total time spent 5 hours.

Note-Special thank you to our customer Todd Colegrove for taking the time to take pictures and do a write-up for the Mustang community.

Audi Q5 Accessories

Audi at Wörthersee Tour 2009
Customized Audi Q5 custom concept prepared for event
Audi showing 20 cars – from TT RS and R8 to A1 concept
“Audi Customizing Club” idea contest for accessories 3,000 square meter stand dedicated to “100 years of Audi”

Each year Wörthersee plays host to the now legendary GTI meet, at which auto enthusiasts and of course Audi fans from throughout Europe come together. AUDI AG once again has its own stand at this extraordinary event. The brand’s appearance at the 28th Wörthersee Tour (from May 20-23) in Reifnitz, Kärnten (Austria), is dedicated to the centennial celebration “100 years of Audi.” In addition to historic models from various decades, the Ingolstadt carmaker is featuring showcase vehicles such as the Audi TTRS, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro and the Audi A1 Sportback. As a special highlight for the event at Wörthersee, Audi has prepared a customized Audi Q5 with 21-inch wheels, wider track, lowered ride height, a special paint finish and a power-enhanced 3.0 TFSI engine: the Audi Q5 custom concept.

This is Audi’s third official appearance at the Wörthersee Tour. Among the events
planned for the roughly 3,000 square meter stand on the south bank of the lake is the launch of an exclusive online idea contest for Audi accessories – the “Audi Customizing Club” (see box). An “architectural” timeline guides those visiting the stand through the history of Audi as a carmaker. This timeline ends at a stage in the form of a banked curve with cars from Audi’s current model lineup and a concept car.

Along the timeline itself are vehicles from various decades of Audi’s history – from the Audi 50 via the Ur-quattro to the Audi A2. Audi is showing a total of 20 vehicles at its stand. Prominently featured is the Audi Q5 custom concept: Audi engineers prepared this particularly sporty version of the SUV specially for the Wörthersee Tour. The test bed for Audi Genuine Accessories in the custom color Daytona Gray, matt rolls on 21-inch wheels of 7 twin-spoke design. Compared to the production model, the track was widened by 90 millimeters (3.54 in) and the ride height lowered by 60 millimeters (2.36in). The power output of the 3.0 TFSI V6 engine has been increased from 245 kW (333hp) to 300 kW (408 hp), allowing the Audi Q5 custom concept to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds. Top speed is governed at 250 km/h (155 mph). (See box for technical data and equipment.)

Among the other showcase vehicles at Wörthersee are both the coupe and roadster versions of the new Audi TT RS. The turbocharged 2.5-liter, 5-cylinder engine in the TT RS pumps out 340 hp to deliver explosive acceleration, driving delight, and unrivalled sound. The TT RS sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in well under five seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The quattro permanent all- wheel drive, an advanced suspension and powerful brakes keep all this power safely under control. With its mostly aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) body, the compact TTRS is an uncompromising driving machine. On the subject of driving machines, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro is also on display at Wörthersee. This mid-engine sports car further extends Audi’s lead in the high-performance sports car segment. Developed in cooperation with quattro GmbH, the R85.2 FSI quattro is the new top-of-the-line R8. Its ten-cylinder engine produces 386 kW(525 hp) to deliver breathtaking performance. Audi technologies such as the lightweight aluminum body and the innovative full-LED headlights immediately place it at the head of the class. A time of 3.9 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) and a top speed of 316 km/h (196 mph) underscore the sports car’s dynamic character.

Another very special member of the R8 family is also appearing at Wörthersee. The GT3 race version of the R8, the 500 hp R8 LMS, marks the first time that Audi Sport had developed a race car specifically for client racing. The ten-cylinder GT3 sports car is facing its first acid test this weekend (May 23 and 24): With factory support from Audi, the ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing teams have entered a total of four vehicles in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. Audi is also providing a peek at its upcoming entry in the compact class below the A3 at Wörthersee: The A1 Sportback concept is the concept car for a five-door four-seater – with all the characteristics of a true Audi. The car, which is 3.99 meters long and 1.75 meters wide (13.09 feet long by 5.74 feet wide), combines trendsetting dynamic styling with optimized space efficiency and superb quality. At the same time, a series of visionary technical solutions take efficiency, dynamism and motoring pleasure into new territory as only Audi knows how. Audi is presenting another version of the innovative hybrid technology in the drive unit for the A1 Sportback concept. At work under the hood is a 1.4-liter TFSI engine developing 110 kW (150 hp), whose power is directed to the front wheels by means of the S tronic dual-clutch transmission. A 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor integrated in the drive train is able to deliver up to an additional 150 Nm of torque (111 lb-ft) when the vehicle is accelerating. During the boosting phase, i.e. when the TFSI engine and electric motor operate simultaneously to enable a sporty driving style, the two power packs deliver impressive propulsion. The tried-and-tested front-wheel drive – supplemented by the newly developed, ESP-controlled active front differential lock – ensures optimum transfer of power to the road. The electric motor is furthermore capable of powering the vehicle alone for zero- emission driving. The capacity of the lithium-ion batteries gives the vehicle a range of up to 100 km (62 miles) in pure electric mode; the motor can be recharged from any powersocket. The automatic start/stop facility, energy recovery and phases of purely electrical operation reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of the Audi A1 Sportback concept by almost 30 percent compared to when it is running on the combustion engine alone.

Despite the sporty performance with a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 7.9seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph), the Audi A1 Sportback concept consumes only 3.9 liters of super unleaded per 100 km (60.31 US mpg). CO2 emissions are 92 g/km (148 g/mile).
